You gotta know!

You gotta know that the Mayors Thames Festival is this weekend and tons of cool things are FREE... such as St. Pauls Cathedral!  Run over there and save yourself that pricey admission, you will not regret it!  For more info click here.

You also need to know that Amazon.co.uk has expanded their American food section and are now up to hundreds of items and some of them even include free shipping!  Hello Quaker Oatmeal, Crystal Light Lemonade, Hershey Chocolate syrup, Kraft Mac N Cheese, Aunt Jemima maple syrup and much much more. For more info click here

You also need to know that I just ate a cupcake from LOVE bakery and it WAS DELICIOUS!  It was even a day old (I received it yesterday and ate it this morning).  I  highly recommend giving this place a try if you like cupcakes.  For more info on LOVE click here

By the way, I recently checked out the Chanel exhibit at Harrods and loved it!  It's only up for three weeks so hurry up and get yourself over there.  I was sneaky and took a couple pictures.  They tell you on the way in that photography is not allowed.  One cool part about the exhibit (there are many) is walking through an entry way of strands of heavy pearls. You immediately feel so luxurious with those pearls running over you :)  Too bad I couldn't sneak a pic with the pearls (sad face here)

"Floor to Ceiling Chanel purse"... need I say more?

The Chelsea Day Spa

After reading a blog from American Girl In Chelsea I thought I would check out The Chelsea Day Spa (located just off Kings Road) and their fabulous manicure for only £12.50!  They did a great job and were VERY nice. I will go back and may even buy their pre-paid nail package so that I can bring my manicure price down to £10!! That's a steal in London.

They also do a great spray tan (from what I've read) and I plan to do that very soon! I'll keep you posted on that one.  In the meantime, I will just enjoy my pretty nails (smile)

Britain's Richest Street Revealed

I read the below and just had to share. Mostly because I live a 5 minute walk from Kensington Palace (former home of Princess Diana) and I walk by this street all the time and had no idea.
Even though they said you can't go down it for a stroll, I'm not so sure that's correct because I'm pretty sure I've walked down it before. Granted there are gates and sometimes guards, but when the gates are open I help myself to a little stroll from time to time... I could be thinking of a different street but I don't think so...
In Nashville I lived in the same subdivision as a member of the country band SheDaisy (yeah, don't worry no one ever knows who that is) and up the street from a Grand Ole Opry legend Stonewall Jackson, but I think Britain's Richest Street may beat that? hmm... does it help if the Homes of Country Music Stars tour buses use to pass my street every day? yeah, I didn't think so...

The Daily Mail (we read it for amusement) recently published an article about the most expensive streets in Britain and surprise – the most expensive one is in London.
It’s a street so exclusive – you can’t even go down it for a stroll as it’s protected by diplomatic security services.
Property on Kensington Palace Gardens is so expensive – it costs £1,193 per square feet (about $1600 USD).

Groupon: Best Mexican Food in London

Groupon: Best Mexican Food in London

I recently wrote a guest blog for Groupon and wanted to share it with all of you! Enjoy!

By the way, feel free to tweet, "like" it on Facebook or even leave a comment!

Click here to read:My Groupon Blog Posting

This taste of Mexico in our capital is brought to us by this week’s guest blogger, Wendy, and we think she did a rather good job. What do you think? Thanks Wendy!
My name is, Wendy McCooey, I’m a southern Tennessee girl with a sales and marketing background who recently started “London in a Day”,
a private tour guide company. I love to travel, cook, craft, read, dabble in photography,
blog and do just about anything if it’s fun. I’m currently seeing what Notting Hill and the rest of London (if not the world) has to offer.
When I moved to London my taste buds went haywire. They kept saying,”GIVE ME BURRITOS”, “GIVE ME SALSA”, “GIVE ME GUACAMOLE”.  I had heard rumors that good Mexican food was hard to find and, as I quickly learned, those rumors were true. Nonetheless, I was determined to find good Mexican in this city.
At the beginning of my search, I was served things like liquid guacamole, ketchup salsa, and nacho cheese Doritos.  Just when I was about to give up, the Mexican cuisine revolution happened in London.  It started with Wahaca.  They bill themselves as, “gourmet meets market fresh street food” – whatever they are, the food is excellent.  Their fresh guacamole and salsa keeps me coming back.  I sometimes dream of their tender and juicy pork tacos with pickle red onions – I love them so much.  Since then, numerous high-quality (and often low-price!) alternatives have arrived on the London scene. Please read along to know what else I have found:
Tortilla
It’s hard to miss the line that forms out the door at lunchtime. It’s an assembly line setup, which is fine because I appreciate seeing the food-preparation process.  They told me that chicken was most popular, so I chose a chicken burrito with their smoked black beans.  I am so glad I did because it blew me away with its deliciousness! The chicken had been marinated for hours in a mellow adobo and then grilled to perfection.  They also offer grilled steak, and a braised pork (my next choice!) that has been braised for hours until fall apart tender. They even have a frequent buyer card! The prices are fantastic – A medium is only £5 and a large is only £6, not to mention their bucket of 5 beers for £12 and silver tequila margaritas.  I’m now a regular.
Wahaca
It is more of a sit-down restaurant, although still very casual . They take Mexican-inspired dishes and source them as ethically and locally as possible.  Their chunky yet creamy guacamole, tomato salsa, and tortilla chips are spot on. The portions there are small, but I find them extremely tasty. I always order their market fresh street food options, and my favorites are the melting pork pibil tacos with pink pickled onions, crispy chicken taquitos, covered in a delicious tomato salsa drizzled with crema and their warm frijoles with crumbled cheese. Although, my friends really enjoy their fish tacos.  As for drinks, they have good, albeit, expensive margaritas made with fresh lime juice and a unique beverage called “Michelada“, a beer with tomato juice, lime juice and spices.
Cafe Pacifico
It has the Mexican decor of a real authentic cantina, which is rare for London.  One should always start with their high-piled nachos with cheese and chili’s or smoked chicken quesadillas with a side of traditional tomato salsa or chunky guacamole.  Then, move onto one of their tasty enchiladas with delicious red sauce with mouth watering re-fried beans and rice or sizzling hot fajitas. Don’t forget to wash it down with an affordable margarita with specialty tequila. You can even make reservations, which I recommend because they can get very busy.
Benito’s Hat
It’s an assembly line set up, very nice staff, and a very cozy environment. The ambience is somewhere between eat-and-run and sit-down.  They keep it simple with few options: burritos, tacos, salads and soup. That’s it. I had the marinated chicken tacos with chips and a water for only £5! What a deal!  The tacos were very tasty, but one of my shells was stale and my beans tasted like they came from a can.  They sell beers and margaritas here too.  They even have a happy hour special!
Cantina Laredo
It serves Mexican cuisine in a more sophisticated atmosphere – so if you are going on a date, this may be your place!  My favorite thing about this place is that they make their Top Shelf guacamole table side. The portion is huge and all ingredients are fresh – and it should be for what they charge.  Their chicken fajita soft tacos are tasty, but dry.  The margarita I got there was £10 and not the biggest in the world, but in their defense, it was tasty.  Their menu is quite extensive so I recommend going online and taking a look.

Random Goat? In London?

Does anyone have any idea as to why this goat is standing on a stack of crates near Spittafield's Market (near Brick Lane) ?

Piccadilly Circus

Piccadilly Circus and the Statue of Eros:
Piccadilly Circus...  Statue of Eros... 2011

Piccadilly Circus has had so much energy running through it over the years, but now it just has a little more neon to go with it...
As you can tell from the picture below taken in 1896  Sanyo wasn't quite so prominent.
Credit: Wikipedia for the picture from 1896

Speaking of that Sanyo sign if you haven't heard they did not renew their lease that allows them to have that neon sign soooo.... in the upcoming months keep an eye out for who will replacement it... It's been years and years since someone has been removed from that famous spot.

Piccadilly Circus was created to join Regents Street, Piccadilly and later Shaftesbury Avenue (West End Theater District) together.

Piccadilly Circus Tube Station is also directly under that busy area. How wild is that?!

Its a statue of an archer... it kind of reminds me of cupid... Back in its day it was pretty naughty with it being one of the first statue to be naked and all... it was also the first statue to be cast in aluminum from what I've read...

What is there to do in Piccadilly Circus?  Shop! See a play! I really LOVE WICKED and Jersey Boys is good too. See a movie! Eat! Drink! People watch! Check out some of the fancy 5 star hotels near by... Take a walk to Trafalgar Square... then to Westminster...

Heck, the better question is What ISN'T THERE to do?  But what ever you do please don't feed the pigeons.

How do I get to Piccadilly Circus?  You can take a bus... I know that bus #9, #159, #94 and a ton more go there... You can take the tube using Central Line( Get off at Oxford Circus and just walk down Regents Street)... Bakerloo... and Piccadilly....  There is always the cute London Black Cabs too!

Where should I eat? If you don't mind a short walk I recommend Mildred's near Carnaby Street.

Enjoy!

Monday Morning: Coffee, shopping, working and celeb spotting!

Monday Morning: Coffee, shopping, working and celeb spotting!

Yesterday I started with MMC (Monday Morning Coffee) with the girls at a place called "Lantana Cafe" near Tottenham Court Road station. You will here more about Lantana Cafe later...

The big news is that I walked from Tottenham Court Road station to Charlotte Street meaning to walk to Charlotte Place then walking to Charlotte Place. I finally found the coffee spot. I was feeling frisky so I order a flat white. Yep a flat white. Not a decaf people. Full on caff.  What did that do?

Well... It meant that I decided to walk some more... so much so that I walked from there to Selfridge's Department Store near Marble Arch then down Park Lane to the snobby Dorchester Hotel (I'm anti-Dorchester after that visit) from there I headed back to Marble Arch stopped at Pret a Manger for some soup with a plan of eating it in Hyde Park. Made it to Hyde Park and guess what NO SPOON. (insert sad hungry face here)

Oh well... s*it happens... so I sucked it up luckily I bought a mini baguette so I scarfed that down and headed down Bayswater hitting ever hotel I passed to tell them about my business "London in a Day".  A mean day in the streets of London! (not really, but it felt fun to say)

Anywho... I walked down Bayswater until it turned into Notting Hill Gate at that point I was 10 minutes from home... so I walked home...  All in all I walked about 3.5 miles.  It felt good.

I even spotted a celeb at a cross walk "Joely Richardson" from Nip/Tuck the one who played Julia McNamara (I acted like I didn't know who she was even though I did and I was inches from her... If it was Hugh Grant I'm sure I would have made a fool out of myself or quite possibly asked him out for a spot of tea.)

Who is she? Daughter of Tony Richardson and Vanessa Redgrave, and granddaughter of actor Sir Michael Redgrave, she is the niece of Lynn Redgrave and her sister Natasha Richardson was also an actress.

Anyways... off to pick up a burrito.

Swiss Cottage

While riding along on Bus 31 yesterday... on our way home from Chalk Farm area we were riding through Swiss Cottage at one point and wondered how it got it's name... I thought it had to do something with a war, but I was wrong...

The district is named after an inn called The Swiss Tavern that was built in 1804 in the style of a Swiss chalet and on the site of a former tollgate keeper's cottage. The inn was later renamed Swiss Cottage

Per wikipedia here is a picture of the original "Swiss Cottage"
per wikipedia... The original Swiss Cottage...

P.S. Did you know The Great Eastern Hotel has a secret train platform that was used to transport fresh sea water from the coast into the spa pools?

Pete Yorn

If you haven't heard Pete Yorn is crossing the pond!

Yep, he's playing in the UK among other places...

He's playing at King's College on May 19 and I've already bought 2 tickets! Can't wait!

google image...Columbia...Pete Yorn.

His song "On Your Side" was actually our wedding song. Yeah, I know, not terribly "wedding-y", but it's the music we were listening to when we fell in love so as long as it made sense to us who cared that all of our wedding guests looked at us with those weird looks. HA!

How can you not like a guy that sings about a Burrito? Who doesn't love Burrito's?

Buy your tickets and I'll see you there!

I'll be the cute one rockin' to a song called Closet.

The Childrens Hour

I recently went to see The Children's Hour starring Kiera Knightley, Carol Kane, Elizabeth Moss, and Ellen Burstyn and believe it or not they were all actually there that day!

No understudies!  Seeing them all on stage in such a small theater was quite a treat.

On the day of the show you can go to the Box Office starting at 10am and buy the remaining best available seats for £15! What a deal! My friend, Christine, was kind enough to go pick them up that morning.

What did I think of the show? For £15 it was good.  The first half was a bit slow, but decent.  The second half got dark and was pretty good. Tons of drama.

Would a kid/teenager like it? Probably not.

Does Kiera Knightley really look that way in person? Yep.

P.S. Did you know that more people shop in Selfridges in one year than live in Australia?

U.S. President Martin Van Buren: Lived in London?

U.S. President Martin Van Buren...located just off Oxford Street

We were strolling along Oxford Street the other day when Mike spotted some embassy's so we took a left and which embassy's we actually saw have left me, but what hasn't was the Blue Plaque (or blue dot as I like to say)  that I spotted, it was the "U.S. President Martin Van Buren lived here" blue dot.  This not only excited me, but it made me curious. Why did he live here? I had no idea so I went home and did some research as I usually do...

The Honest Sausage

When walking through Regents Park for the first time I spotted this cute place "The Honest Sausage" the name cracked me up.  Not to mention when I spotted it I also noticed 2 wiener dog's walking away from it. Too cute! I'll have to go there for lunch one day.
The Honest Sausage located in Regents Park
Check out the two very cute wiener dogs leaving The Honest Sausage
