Terms and such

Terms of food and much more...

In the picture you will see a full English breakfast. It really isn't "my cup of tea"... I'm more of an All-Star breakfast at Waffle House type girl or maybe some crepes at Marche (East Nashville between Gallatin and Woodland St)... Nonetheless, some people do love the weird under cooked bacon, sausage links, grilled tomato, fried eggs, toast and the weirdest item of all BAKED BEANS and that is OK by me who am I to judge what one eats for breakfast I'm just some American.

Now on to the terms...
Left Side British term = Right side American term

I'll start with food in the spirit of Thanksgiving...
Coriander = Cilantro
Courgette = Zucchini
Rocket = Arugula
Herbs = Herbs - Pronounce the "H"
Swede = Rutabaga
Flapjacks = Thick Chewy Granola Bar
Porridge = Oatmeal
Mince = Ground Beef (I cringe when I hear "MINCE(D)" for some reason (sorry Brits)
Jelly = Jell-O - say jam or marmalade instead
Prawn = Shrimp
Bap(s) = Bun(s)
Custard = Pudding
Biscuit = Cookies
Candy Floss = Cotton Candy

and now for some randoms:
tick = instead of "check" the box
Ya = instead of "ok"
Vitamins = Pronounces "vit" like "fit" uh - menz
Mate = Friend or Buddy
Indicators = Blinkers
Trolley = Cart or as I would normally say "buggy"
Mobile = Cell Phone
Loo or Water Closet (WC) = Toilet or Bathroom
Que = Line
Hand Basin = Sink
Bin = Garbage/Trash
Wheely Bin = Trash Can On Wheels
Garden = Yard
Tuck In = Dig In
Take Away = To Go
Worth a Go = Worth a Try
No Worries = No Problem
Flat = Apartment
Lift = Elevator

Oh by the way, I forgot to mention in my Bath blog that Jane Austin lived/lives there...

And No Worries, yes, we had a Turkey Dinner for Thanksgiving believe it or not, I found a tasty place down the hill from our "flat" (Tom's Cafe on Westbourne Grove Road) serving a great traditional Thanksgiving meal

Cheers,
WMMc
